About the Maasai

The Maasai are a Nilotic ethnic group inhabiting northern, central and southern Kenya and northern Tanzania. They are among the best known local populations due to their residence near the many game parks of the African Great Lakes, and their distinctive customs and dress.

History & Origins

The Maasai originated in the Nile Valley region of North Africa, migrating southwards around the 15th century. They arrived in Tanzania in the 17th-18th centuries, conquering and assimilating other groups. Their traditional territory now spans the border between Kenya and Tanzania.
