About the Sukuma
The Sukuma are a Bantu ethnic group inhabiting the southeastern African Great Lakes region. They are the largest ethnic group in Tanzania, with an estimated 10 million members.
History & Origins
The Sukuma migrated to their present location in northwestern Tanzania around the 18th century. They developed a complex agricultural and pastoral society. The name "Sukuma" means "north" in their language, indicating their position relative to other groups.
