About the Iraqw

The Iraqw are a Cushitic ethnic group inhabiting the Arusha and Manyara regions of Tanzania, concentrated in the Mbulu Highlands.

History & Origins

The Iraqw are descendants of early Cushitic speakers who migrated from Ethiopia thousands of years ago. They developed intensive agriculture systems including irrigation terraces. They resisted Maasai expansion and maintained their distinct language and culture.
