About the Pare

The Pare are a Bantu ethnic group living in the Pare Mountains of northern Tanzania.

History & Origins

The Pare developed a complex society of mountain chiefdoms with advanced agricultural terraces. They were early adopters of coffee cultivation and participated in trade routes between the coast and interior. Their history includes resistance to both slave traders and colonial powers.
